Shocking Experience at the University Hospital Bonn: 3,000 Euros Taken – No Results, No Care

My son suffers from a rare condition – intestinal lymphangiectasia with chylous ascites. To confirm the diagnosis and determine treatment, he urgently needed an MR lymphography with gadolinium.

Through the internet we found the University Hospital Bonn in Germany, where this procedure is performed. At first, the reply to our email sounded positive: they said they treat this condition, perform MR diagnostics and provide therapy. But we were then referred to the international IMS department — and from that moment on, all friendliness ended.

IMS demanded a prepayment of 3,000 euros before even giving us a date. The price was clearly inflated. Whenever we asked questions, the only response was: “Send 3,000 euros.” This went on for nearly a month.

Since in our country there is war and banks are unreliable, we asked to pay in cash on arrival. They agreed.

On July 29 we arrived in Bonn. In the IMS office we were received arrogantly, with the same phrase: “Money first.” The next day we paid 3,000 euros in cash. My son was in a serious condition — he had just undergone a laparocentesis and still had stitches. Yet nobody spoke English, Russian or Ukrainian in this so-called “international” department. Communication was only possible through Google Translate. Staff spoke to us through clenched teeth while playing on their computers, showing no empathy.

When we begged for an urgent date, given that we had come from a country at war and my son’s health was worsening, the answer was cold: “No guarantees, we don’t know when.”

Finally, after a week of waiting, the MR lymphography was done on August 5. We expected clarity and a plan. Instead we received vague statements, contradictions and empty speculation. No clear answers, no concrete treatment options. Instead, we were told to stay for further expensive tests and hospitalization — costing tens of thousands of euros — without any certainty of benefit.

The worst came after: we were promised to receive the written report and 3D images by email within 2–3 days. Weeks have passed, and we received nothing. Our emails on August 11, 12, 13 went unanswered. Phone calls were useless — no English, only German, in an international department. When a doctor acquaintance called on our behalf in German, he was told the report usually takes two weeks. Later they changed it to two months. Endless lies and excuses.

To this day, we still do not have the results we paid for.

What we experienced at the University Hospital Bonn was not medical care — it was indifference, greed and deception.

We demand what we paid for:

  • The MR lymphography results (images and report)

  • The promised medical consultation report

Until then, we warn other patients:
Beware of the IMS department at University Hospital Bonn — they take your money, but they do not care about your life.
